How to Restrict Apps on iPhone with Screen Time

Use Screen Time to set supported schedules, allowances or content restrictions. Inspect the controls on your installed release and account, including allowed exceptions and blocking behavior. A time allowance is different from hiding an app or adding a private app password.

Quick answer

Use Screen Time to set supported schedules, allowances or content restrictions. Inspect the controls on your installed release and account, including allowed exceptions and blocking behavior. A time allowance is different from hiding an app or adding a private app password.

Method

Screen Time access restrictions

Steps

  1. Open Settings → Screen Time for the account or family member you manage.
  2. Choose the available schedule, app allowance or content restriction that matches your goal.
  3. Review allowed exceptions, passcode configuration and any blocking option.
  4. Test a harmless app during the restricted condition and confirm access to essential functions.

Limits

Restrictions do not delete an installation, erase account data or guarantee invisibility. Allowed exceptions and administrative recovery affect the result.

Photosbuilt-inUse the Hidden collection for pictures and videos; app visibility and photo-library access are separate controls.
Messagesbuilt-inStart with notification previews and the difference between a conversation and a saved attachment. A photo saved from a message can exist in Photos too.
Safaribuilt-inPrivate browsing, browser history and application visibility answer different privacy questions. The built-in browser is not an eligible downloaded app for the Hidden folder workflow.
Notesbuilt-inDistinguish locking an eligible application from protecting a specific note. The app-level menu does not establish the recovery rules for a locked note.
WhatsAppdownloadedFor a separately downloaded installation, inspect the iOS icon menu for locking or hiding. Eligibility and family or device restrictions determine which options are available.
InstagramdownloadedInspect the iOS lock or hide menu for the installed app. Removing its Home Screen icon leaves the app installed and does not change access through the account elsewhere.

Questions

Is a Screen Time allowance an app password?

No. An allowance controls permitted use under the supported Screen Time configuration. It should not be described as an independent password protecting every file inside an app. Review blocking behavior, exceptions and administration separately. If opening authentication or file storage is the concern, inspect the control designed for that boundary.

Why can an app still open during a restricted period?

Inspect whether the configuration is a reminder or an actual blocking condition, along with allowed apps and other exceptions. Confirm that you edited the intended account and device. Test a harmless app under the exact restricted condition rather than assuming that a schedule label alone establishes the behavior you wanted.

Does restricting an app delete its data?

Do not treat an access restriction as deletion. The installation, account information and exported content are separate things to inspect. Use supported deletion or account controls only when that is your actual goal, after understanding recovery and copies. A Screen Time test should not require erasing important files.

Do not assume every route is covered. Apple documents distinct content controls and release-specific allowance behavior. Inspect the associated website, browser and download route that matters to your goal. A successful test of the installed application does not establish the same result for every service or access path elsewhere.

Can I manage a child’s settings this way?

Use Apple’s supported family setup and choose the correct child in the relevant Screen Time controls. Administrative relationships, age rules, passcodes and permitted exceptions matter. Do not treat a self-imposed personal limit as equivalent to every family configuration. Verify the actual device and preserve appropriate access to essential functions.

How should I undo an accidental restriction?

Return to the specific schedule, allowance or restriction you changed and restore the intended setting through the supported administrator workflow. Confirm the account and any exceptions before testing again. There is no need to delete the application or reset unrelated accounts simply to reverse an access-management preference.
