How to Turn Off Shared With You Photos on iPhone

Control which message attachments appear in Photos without confusing the display setting with deletion.

Reviewed 2026-10-31 · 4,500 app labels in the database

Quick answer

Go to Settings, Apps, Messages, Shared with You and turn off Photos or Automatic Sharing. For one conversation, use its Show in Shared with You preference. This changes presentation, not deletion or recipient access.

At a glance

Platform: Messages; current menu placement varies

Method: Shared with You preference

Steps: 4; time varies by setup; backup impact needs separate review.

Method and verification steps

  1. Open Settings, Apps, Messages.
  2. Open Shared with You.
  3. Turn off Photos or Automatic Sharing, or change the conversation preference.
  4. Check a harmless attachment and any manually saved copy separately.

What this does not do: Does not erase conversations or recall saved attachments.

Control which message attachments appear in Photos without confusing the display setting with deletion.

Find the correct sharing feature

Shared with You surfaces content received in Messages in supported apps. It is separate from Shared Albums, an iCloud Shared Photo Library and basic synchronization. If an incoming attachment appears in Photos, start with Shared with You. If somebody else can see a picture you contributed, review the destination's participants instead.

Change the app or conversation preference

Apple's current app-wide path is Settings, Apps, Messages, Shared with You. Disable it for Photos or turn off Automatic Sharing. For one conversation, open it in Messages, open the contact or group details and turn off Show in Shared with You. Names and placement may vary with your installed release.

Check what remains

Use an ordinary attachment to verify the result. The setting controls presentation; it does not erase the conversation, remove a manually saved library image or revoke another person's downloaded file. Inspect those copies separately if deletion or access removal is your goal.

Frequently asked questions

Does this delete messages?

No. It controls whether supported apps surface Messages content.

Does this remove Shared Library participants?

No. Shared Library membership has its own controls.

Which control does this guide address?

The method is shared with you preference. Go to Settings, Apps, Messages, Shared with You and turn off Photos or Automatic Sharing. For one conversation, use its Show in Shared with You preference. This changes presentation, not deletion or recipient access.

Which software version should I check?

Messages; current menu placement varies. Read the current provider instructions and inspect the options actually offered on your device before changing important files. A documentation review does not establish a hands-on test on every release.

What does this method leave unchanged?

Does not erase conversations or recall saved attachments. Review the account, shared destinations and exported copies independently. A successful local access check does not prove that every earlier copy is protected by the same control.

How can I verify the result without exposing private files?

Start with an ordinary sample you would be comfortable showing elsewhere. Follow the steps, close the app and reopen it. Inspect another device or exported copy when relevant. Confirm the result before changing important content.
